Introduction
On March 16th, 2002, Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Antony Zziwa was consecrated as the co-adjutor bishop of the Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese, marking the beginning of his journey as a bishop. Today, on his 21st Episcopal Ordination Anniversary, we celebrate and honor his remarkable service to the Church and society. This article takes a brief look at his life and accomplishments.
Biography
Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Antony Zziwa was born on February 16, 1956, in the Kasambya Mubende Parish of the Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese. He was ordained a priest on November 16th, 1980, for the Archdiocese of Kampala. On December 18th, 2001, he was appointed as the co-adjutor bishop of the Kiyinda-Mityana diocese and was consecrated as bishop on March 16th, 2002. He assumed canonical possession of the Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese on October 23rd, 2004, and was ceremoniously enthroned on November 21st, 2004, becoming the 3rd bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana. In addition to his role as bishop, he is also the Chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, a position he has held since 2018.

Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Antony Zziwa’s accomplishments extend beyond his condemnation of abductions and attacks, corruption, domestic violence, child marriage, and human rights violations. He has been a leading voice in advocating for environmental conservation and promoting good health practices. Bishop Zziwa has been actively involved in campaigns to sensitize communities on the importance of clean water and sanitation, which has resulted in a significant reduction in waterborne diseases in the Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese.
Moreover, Bishop Zziwa has been at the forefront of the fight against poverty in Uganda. He has initiated and supported various income-generating projects in the diocese, which have helped to uplift the living standards of the communities. Bishop Zziwa believes that empowering people with skills and resources is key to eradicating poverty and promoting sustainable development.
Under Bishop Zziwa’s leadership, the Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese has made significant strides in education, health, and pastoral ministry. He has prioritized the provision of quality education and healthcare services to the people, and through his leadership, several schools and health centers have been constructed and equipped with modern facilities. Bishop Zziwa is also instrumental in promoting pastoral ministry, empowering priests and lay leaders to effectively serve the communities.
Conclusion
Bishop Zziwa’s accomplishments as a bishop and a leader in Uganda are numerous and commendable. His unwavering commitment to the promotion of social justice, environmental conservation, and poverty alleviation has transformed the lives of many people in the Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese and beyond.
